I enjoyed the camaraderie of the by-election on Saturday but felt very uncomfortable with what I was delivering. Blue leaflet with a candidate in blue, with sentiments that came out of the blue too! There wasn't much on the leaflet that was distinctively Liberal Democrat.

One of the people I canvassed last Tuesday, said the whole fight over HS2 reminded him of the one over the building of the M25; many didn't like it at the time but in the long run, it was a huge benefit (imagine getting into or out of London without it).

I was pleasantly surprised.

Not every homeowner is Chesham and Amersham is NIMBY, and we should act like it.

This is totally wrong-headed. You miss the core Liberal value of localism, where local people get to have a say in what happens in their area. Federalism, power exercised as close to the people as possible, is a core part of liberalism. The government proposed planning laws will take power away from local people.

I know that liberalism is about being an individual, but there are times when you have to put aside your personal feelings and campaign for the party. If we lose by 2000 votes, how will this article and your stance have helped roll back conservatism and help implement liberal values?
